Shaker Kitchens For South East London

Shaker Kitchens, Italian Soul: Two Traditions, One Idea

Our design philosophy is rooted in Italy, there's no denying it, especially the concept of designing for mass production in the aftermath of the Second World War and how Italian product and furniture design influenced the whole world at that time. That mid-century philosophy is at the root of everything we do, bringing high-end Italian, gorgeous design to homes in south east London.

Built on the belief that beauty comes from utility

The Shaker furniture movement isn't anathema to that at all. Shaker design was built on a belief that beauty comes from utility (nothing decorative for its own sake, every joint earning its place) and that honest materials and craftsmanship were themselves a form of devotion. That's not so far from what the Italian modernists were chasing: stripping away excess to let good design serve everyday life. Bringing British Shaker into our work alongside Italian design isn't a contradiction, it's a continuation, which is why we build with both.

The microshaker profile

A slimmer shaker, with a narrower stile than the standard frame for a more contemporary read. Zecchinon builds it as Frame 1.5 (a one-and-a-half-centimetre stile); Burbidge's equivalent is Brackenbury. Both take the same finishes and door furniture as their standard ranges.

Lay-on shaker

The door sits on the front of the carcass, so the shaker detail is all in the door and the run reads as a continuous surface. Zecchinon builds this as Frame 5 (a five-centimetre stile); Burbidge's classic shaker is built the same way.

In-frame shaker

The door sits inside a timber frame fixed to the front of the carcass, the way a piece of furniture is built, with a shadow line and a set of reveals that stay even along a whole run. Burbidge builds to this construction alongside their lay-on range.

Painted to order

Burbidge paint every door to order, the colour mixed specifically for your kitchen and extending well past a standard chart. Wrapped and laminate finishes sit alongside the painted range for a different budget and wear profile.

The reeded finish

A fine reeded groove cut into the door face, available within the microshaker profile from both manufacturers (Zecchinon's Frame 1.5 and Burbidge's Brackenbury alike). It adds texture and shadow to a flat front, the shaker joint sitting exactly where it would on a plain door.
